for Pontiac!
Welcome to the City of Pontiac’s Official Website for the 2024-2025 Vision Pontiac planning process!
The City of Pontiac is updating its Master Plan, to be known as ‘Vision Pontiac’, to reflect the current and anticipated needs and wants of the community as well as better guide future land use and development decisions over the next 5, 10, to 20 years. In addition, with rising housing costs and shifting housing demands, the City is also working to conduct a Housing Study and Needs Assessment. The planning processes for these two efforts offer a great opportunity for community members and stakeholders to offer their input and shape the City’s future. You can use this website as the go-to for updates throughout the master planning and housing study process.
The final draft of Vision Pontiac: The City of Pontiac's Master Plan is ready for the community's review, and there is still time to weigh in! Click the comment button to share your feedback and ideas for the Plan by April 8th, 2025.
What is a
Master Plan?
The Master Plan is a long-range guiding document that sets vision and a roadmap for key components of the community, including but not limited to future growth and land use decisions, transportation, community facilities, housing, natural resources and environmental features, community and historical resources, and urban design and community character. It establishes ground rules for private development and public improvements to ensure collaboration and effective use of local funds that align with the community’s interests. The plan will provide clear goals, objectives, strategies, and policies growth, preservation, and enhancement.
City Council, together with city staff, established the following seven focus areas for Vision Pontiac:
1. Future Land Use
2. Neighborhoods and Housing
3. Historic Preservation
4. Development and Redevelopment
5. Downtown and Commercial Corridors
6. Workforce Development
7. Transportation and Walkability
What is the Housing Study and Needs Assessment?
The housing study and needs assessment, a supplemental document to the Master Plan, will provide community leaders and stakeholders with an assessment and plan of community-specific housing priorities, policy alternatives, and intervention strategies, including land use and zoning decisions. The study will assess existing housing conditions, demographic and market demands, and rent rates, as well as identify critical housing gaps and issues. It will also identify current and forecasted housing needs over the next 10 years. Public input is also important to this plan.
In tandem with public engagement efforts for the Master Plan, each public event, survey, and outreach effort will focus specifically on housing to understand what residents are experiencing as they interact with the housing market, what their concerns are, and what obstacles they face when searching for quality, affordable housing.
